Texas Holdem er klart den mest populære utgaven av poker. Spilt under tv sendte begivenheter som World Poker Tour (WPT) og udødlig-gjort i filmer som "Rounders". Holdem er klart det pokerspillet å spille.
Spillets konsept er rimlig enkelt. Hver spiller blir utdelt to kort vendt ned. "Dealeren" legger så ut, totalt, fem kort i flopp (på bordet) vendt oppover; Disse er tilgjengelig for samtlige spillere. Spillere kan bruke hvilken som helst kombinasjon av deres egne (skjulte) kort og floppen som er lagt på bordet for å lage best mulig hånd. Den spilleren med beste 5 kort tar poten. Spillet er selvsagt en hel del mer avansert enn som så, og som oftest, ligger hovedproblemet rundt penger. Det som er vanlig å bruke er "Fiexed Limit", "Pot Limit" og "No Limit" Hvor spillet egentlige skjarm kommer til syne. Sistnevnte er det kun pokerfjes og strategi som vil vinne frem.

Når en spiller "Fixed limit" er både bet og raise beløpt forhånds bestemt. For eksempel i et $5/$10 Fixed spill må både bets og raise de første to rundene være $5 og ikke mer. De siste to rundene er både bet og raise $10.
Når en spiller "Pot Limit" kan verken bet eller raise være større enn daværende pot. Slik at om potten er $30 så kan en ikke satse mer enn ytterliggere $30. En ting å huske på her er at om du raiser en spillers bet så er det beløpet du ser spilleren med også med i potten før du regner maks innsats. La oss for eksempel si at poten er $100. Spiller X åpner med et bet på $100. Da vil din maksimums bet være $300 (Potten er i utgangspunktet $100 + Spiller Xs $100 + Dine $100).
Fremdeles med oss? Ok... Den siste spillemåten er "No Limit". Dette sier kanskje segselv. Her er det ingen maksumums bet. Du kan vedde så mye som du vil i løpet av en runde. Minimums bet er høy blind (eller big blind på godt Norsk...). "No Limit" - Holdem skaper helt klart de største potene, kjapp spilling og i tillegg morro å se på! Nå som du har valgt en spillemåte (?...), så er det på tide å ta en tur innom konseptene med å vedde. Innsats, Blinds og Høyningstak (Cap).
Innsats: Innsatsen er bundet direkte til hvilket type spill du velger. I et "Fixed Limit" spill bestemmer innsatsen bet og raise for hver runde. La oss bruke $5/$10 eksempelet igjen. De to første rundene må bet og raise være $5, ikke høyere og ikke mindre. De to siste rundene må bet og raise være $10 med samme betingelser.
Taket (Cap): I "Fixed Limit" spill kan hver runde inneholde ett bet og maksimalt 3 høyninger/raise. Dette er kjent som tak eller Cap. Slik at hvis et bet er lagt kan det kun bli høynet av motspillere 3 ganger i samme runde. Etter dette må enten alle spillere se spilleren ved å legge på like mye eller kaste kortene. Om det kun er to spillere igjen øker taket til 5 høyninger/raise.
I både "Pot Limit" og "No Limit" skal innsatsen representere beløpet som blir bestemt som big blind.
Blinds: Blinds er obligatoriske bet som blir lagt av de to første spillerene etter dealer. Den første spilleren til venstre for dealer må legge på "small blind". Dette er et forhåndsbestemt beløp som er halvparten av innsats (big blind). I "Pot Limit" og "No Limit" er "small blind" det samme som liten innsats (dvs. halvparten av innsats og minimum av hva en spiller kan hive på bordet). Spilleren til venstre for "small blind" er "big blind". Dette beløpet skal være det samme som innsats/stake. Virker dette komplisert?.. Det er egentlig ikke det..
La oss bruke vår kjære $5/$10 innsats igjen. I et "Fixed Limit" spill vil "small blind" hive $2 (halvparten av $5 og avrundet ned til nærmeste hele tall/chip). "Big blind" vil da være $5. I en $5/$10 "Pot Limit" eller "No Limit" vil "small blind" være $5 pg "Big blind" være $10. I poker blir blinds brukt som et insentiv for å få spillere til å starte spillet og danne en pot. En hver spiller som vil være med på runden må legge på bordet like mye som "Big blind". Blinds er å betrakte som "live" bets. Det vil si at en tar runden rundt bordet tilbake til blinds hvor de har mulighet til å sjekke (Small blind må alltid "calle" eller hive på opp til innsats for å bli med), calle, raise eller kaste seg.
Sound complicated? It really isn't. Let's use our trusty $5/$10 stakes again. In a fixed limit game, the small blind posts $2 (half of $5 rounded down). The big blind posts $5. In a $5/$10 pot limit/no limit game, the small blind posts $5, and the big blind posts $10.
In poker we use blinds as an incentive for players to play a hand, and build the pot. Consider the blinds like a mandatory bet and raise; any players that want to play the hand must match the big blind to stay in. The blinds are considered live bets, so when the action goes around the table and returns to them, they have the option of checking, calling, raising or folding as they see fit.
Some other notes about blinds: Any player has the option of sitting out and waiting for the big blind to reach them. However, if a player sits out and misses posting the big blind, then that player will be required to post a big blind and a small “dead” blind before returning. This rule is in place to prevent potential abuse from players who join a table and then leave before having to post the blinds.
One thing we haven't talked much about is the dealer. In poker each player in turn plays as the dealer. At the table we represent the dealer position with:
The Dealer Button: The Button is a graphic symbol that represents the theoretical dealer. After each hand, the button moves clockwise to the next active player, who becomes the dealer for that hand. This player is considered to be "on the button", and is the last person to act in the betting round. The first player to the left of the button is the first player to be dealt cards, the first player to act in each betting round and the player that posts the small blind.
The Gameplay: OK, let's play some Holdem. You've bought into a table, sat down and posted your big blind. What's next?
Pre Flop: The Pocket Cards: (aka the Hole Cards). The dealer deals each player two cards face down. Only the player can see his/her pocket cards. After the cards are dealt, action lies on the player after the big blind. This player must decide whether to call, raise or fold the big blind. Each player in turn is given these options, until all bets are called and the big blind checks. Don't forget, in a Fixed Limit game, any raises are limited to the lower stake amount and in a Pot Limit game, the bet can't exceed the pot amount.
The Flop: Now the dealer turns over the first three community cards, called "the flop". All betting rounds start with the player directly to the dealer's left. For Fixed Limit games, this round of betting still uses the lower stake, using our example $5/$10 game, any bets or raises must be $5. The Pot Limit and No Limit rules don't change.
The Turn: (AKA Fourth Street). The fourth community card is dealt and a new betting round begins. The bet amount for Fixed Limit games increases to the upper stake. Betting continues until all bets are called.
The River: Here the final community card is shown and the last round of betting takes place. The bet amount for Fixed Limit games is still the big stake.
The Showdown: All the bets have been called, it's time to show the cards. The last player to bet or raise during the final round of betting will show his/her hand first. If all players checked through (nobody bet), the player to the left of the dealer will show first. The remaining players' hands will be automatically revealed moving clockwise, unless a hand is weaker than the winning hand shown. In this case, you'll have the option to show, or muck (fold without showing) your cards. The best five-card hand takes the pot.
Buying the pot: If during a betting round you make a bet and all players fold to you, you've bought the pot. You have the option to show or muck your cards.
